Traditional Festivals

The greatest representations of the tradition of Tivoli are the historical feasts and festivals having as central theme the devotion to the saints and to the gastronomical local culture;

The most important events are the Festa dell'Inchinata, a deeply-felt religious event, the Good Friday Procession, a historic commemoration of the Passion of Christ, the Festival of the Pizzutello, a popular festival in honour of a particular kind of quality grapes cultivated in this territory, and the Fiera di San Giuseppe, an old commodities and livestock market which has now become an exhibition of arts and craft stalls full of flavors and fragrances.

Tivoli Carnival

Dating back to the late 16th century, the Carnival used to open celebrations dedicated to Saint Anthony.

It is still one of the most eagerly expected events, not only on the part of children, but also all the citizens of Tivoli. In fact, at Carnival time, Tivoli is rich in colour and with the fragrance and scents of various foods. The folkloristic parades of floats with papier-mache figures and the stalls selling the typical culinary products of the Carnival period are an impressive sight.

Tivoli Foundation Day

Every year Tivoli celebrates its founding on 5 April, the Tivoli Foundation Day. In this period there are a lot of cultural, artistic and athletic events.

The opening ceremony starts in the presence of the Mayor and the Bishop of Tivoli.

Processione dell'Inchinata

According to some documents, this procession dates back to the first half of the 16th century, although some traces set a date to this event in the late Middle Ages.

Today, the Procession of the Inchinata ("the bowing") takes place every 14 August, the day on which the statue of the Lady of Graces and the image of St. Salvator, carried on shoulders by the faithful, go to make a greeting in the Lady of Graces' honour, in front of the Church of Saint Mary Major.

Pizzutello Festival

The first edition of The Pizzutello Festival was celebrated on 2 October 1845, after Pope Gregory XVI's visit to Tivoli.

During the festival the citizens of Tivoli organize floats adorned with Pizzutello, the special oval-shaped grape. Today this tradition is still strong in Tivoli and takes place on the last Saturday of September.
